Our Place in the World… where we are once again a social and economic leader.

We will address international security challenges, including transnational crime, terrorism and cyber security, but we must regain our respected place in the world, where we are seen as an honest broker and a moral leader.

Canada’s peacekeeping commitments, arguably one of our proudest global contributions, are today ranked 53rd in the world. Ottawa’s lost UN Security Council seat bid is another example of our diminishing clout in the international arena.

The most serious problem facing Canada with respect to diplomacy is the absence of a true strategic foreign policy which engages the international community. We must focus more on delivering foreign policy programs and less on rhetorical bait and switch.

Promoting democracy and respect for human rights, and contributing to effective global governance and international security must be our priority where we support peaceful, democratic transitions and stabilization in the world.
